If you’re on Usenet, a VPN is a great way to ensure that you will get the best speeds and safest transfers possible.Welcome to the usenet subreddit. So in many cases, if your Usenet connection was being throttled, a VPN can bypass that and drastically improve your transfer speeds. However, with a VPN, your own ISP won’t know what kind of data you’re transmitting or receiving. This is called “throttling.” A throttled connection can be agonizingly slow and, unfortunately, services like Usenet and P2P are often targeted for this. Internet Service Providers (ISPs) will sometimes purposely slow down certain kinds of online traffic. Moreover, a VPN can make your Usenet activity better by hiding the type of data transfer it is. We have no control over It’ll ensure that all your online activity is protected from third party spying. However, this is only a fraction of the protection that you get with a VPN.īy using a VPN with your Usenet service, you’ll get the benefits not only of encryption, but also the anonymity that comes with IP masking.Īnother reason to use a VPN: if you are using a web browser or newsreader API to access an NZB indexer, for example, our Usenet SSL connections don’t hide that. Here at Newshosting, we protect all of your Usenet connections with 256-bit encryption through the SSL protocol. What Does This Have to Do with Usenet?Įverything. That way, you can be sure that all of your communications are safe while using a VPN. It also builds an encrypted tunnel for your data that keeps potential spies from even being able to see the data going from node to node. That way, anybody who intercepts your communications will only see gibberish.Ī quality VPN does more than that, however. That computer then uses special instructions to unscramble it at the destination. However, it can also be used by bad actors to watch your data covertly and make copies of it.Įncryption systematically scrambles all of your data before sending it to another computer. This helps them track down bugs, prevent malware, and assign system resources properly. System administrators can use packet sniffers to see what data is being transmitted on their network. This is called “ packet sniffing” and has an entirely legitimate purpose. When you make a connection on the Internet, the data is sent through a series of “nodes.” And because the Internet is public, those nodes can actually be watched by third parties. The other thing that a VPN does is encrypt all of your data for you so that it can’t be read by anybody watching. IP addresses are a necessary part of how the Internet works, so we can’t get rid of them entirely, but we can limit how often your real one is used. This is called “IP masking” because it hides your true IP address, which is where a lot of private information is stored. This way, all that information that the other party can see looks like it’s coming from the VPN server, not you personally. From that point until you log off, all of your data is sent to that server first. This is mainly to avoid traffic shaping tactics by ISPs, however, and keep your download. ![]() When you log on to a VPN, your computer connects to a VPN server. As noted above, Newshosting has its own VPN, adding a further dimension of privacy to your activity. It’s not difficult to imagine how this could be the opening a hacker needs to steal your identity. ![]() Not only the contents of your request, but information on who you are, where you’re located, who your ISP is, and more. To put it simply, whenever you connect to another computer to see a webpage or download a file, you’re sending a lot of information out into the Web. The best, easiest answer is “with a VPN.” What is a VPN?Ī virtual private network or “VPN” is a security tool that you use online. It’s a constant struggle against people who keep finding new ways to attack your data. Maintaining your privacy online isn’t something you do once. Usenet is one of the most secure protocols on the Internet, but that doesn’t mean that everything you do is private. ![]()

Outside of those, Neon mostly has the features you’d expect from a modern web browser. Opera uses Messenger as an excellent example: your friends and conversations on the left, and a larger window for another website on the right. The feature comes in handy both for productivity and text editing, but for web apps too. You can drag the divider in the middle to adjust the sizes. It works much like split view on macOS and iPad. Choosing one will snap that window alongside the other. Drag one tab onto another to get a prompt: left view or right. The last important feature though not entirely unique is split screen. My first suggestion: turn it into a GIF maker or at least tack that on. The Snap feature is useful but needs to evolve. As far as I can tell, you can’t even download your screen snaps from Neon. I guess it’s valuable to take quick clips of web pages for later, but taking regular screenshots has always worked just fine for me. The Gallery lets you view your collection. I’m a little less certain about the future of this one. It’s 2017 - this feature shouldn’t even be the future, every browser should have it.Īnother media related feature is the Snap feature and gallery. It only works while the Neon browser window is expanded, but it works great as a built-in video player. Click the pop-out button to expand into picture-in-picture mode. Even better, you can see a list of all current videos open and control them from the sidebar. The Player allows you to play or pause video from one tab even if you’re not currently viewing it. The most notable ones live in the sidebar. Moving past the looks, Neon also has some excellent new features. RELATED : How To Add A Folder To The Favorites In Mac Finder: A Step-by-Step Guide Smart, New Features Everything about the design feels very intentional from the dimensionality to the lightweight fonts and the minimalistic icons.īut it’s not enough for Neon to look good, it has to bring the heat. The World Wide Web is an entire world to explore and Neon is the portal into that new world. What pleases me the most personally is that I get what Opera is going for here. Opera Neon is the sleekest web browser I’ve come across in some time. Opening the Settings bridges the gap even further since Neon runs on the Chromium browser engine. ![]() More on these in a moment.Īt the bottom is the Menu icon with similar options to that of Google Chrome. Neon has the standard New Tab icon, the Player, the Snap (read: screenshot) feature, your Gallery of snaps, and downloads. This is where a lot of the new features live. On the left is another sidebar with much smaller icons. ![]() Drag an icon over a different open website to create a split screen - especially useful if you frequently use web apps. In fact, you can even minimize a website window off to the side to get back to the background with your favorite links. They look like dock icons over on the right. In keeping with this theme, tabs don’t look like tabs. When you open a website, it purposefully pops over in a new layer to give the illusion that it’s a window running within something like an Internet OS. Above that is the address bar to navigate elsewhere or search. It opens with your favorite website icons floating over a serene background image. Neon doesn’t open up a blank New Tab page like most browsers. It actually reminds me of a more elegant, lightweight AOL Desktop from back in the day. Opera Neon feels like an operating system in itself. But that begs the question: is Neon really the future? Neon’s Interface Opera makes it perfect clear that this browser is meant as a preview, something that will evolve and expand over time. It’s not likely that you’ll suddenly download Neon and be able to replace your current browser. It has an entirely different user interface with some unique multitasking features and the overall experience is quite intriguing. Opera Neon is a proposed glimpse in the future - it’s where Opera sees web browsers eventually heading. Opera recently released one of the most unique desktop browsers we’ve seen in many years. ![]() ![]() ![]() Before closing the assistant, search for an image named WindowsSupport.dmg somewhere under /Library:įind /Library -name "*Windows*Support*dmg" ![]() Open Boot Camp Assistant and select the Download Windows Support Software option from the Actions menu. In researching how to do this post-facto for this post, it seems like you can download these directly from Apple, but why risk it. Preserving BootCamp driversīefore removing macOS, get a copy of the Boot Camp drivers that will be necessary to set up Windows. These include having the necessary drivers at hand, and ensuring we have a way back to macOS in case something goes wrong. To prepare the internal SSD for a clean installation of Windows 10, you should take some precautionary steps before wiping the drive. Some of these steps are only necessary if you want to wipe the drive and go for a Windows-only system, which is what I wanted to do, but you can proceed with a Boot Camp-supported installation as well. Given that the process is tricky, I have written down the various steps that are required to reach a fully-functional system. So, this past weekend, and armed with a ton of patience, I decided to wipe the internal SSD drive and install Windows 10 from scratch. It was time to repartition the drive and, noticing how I had not touched macOS at all for months… it was time to do the unthinkable: to kiss goodbye to macOS altogether. And this situation was starting to become problematic. It turns out that games like Black Mesa, which I just bought during the Xmas sale, require lots of space, duh. I have had to fight various issues like random reboots and poor graphics drivers though.īut then… I recently started running out of disk space on the Windows partition. That happened over 8 months ago and my experience so far has been positive. I didn’t like having the machine sit unused, so I decided it was time to fix the situation by installing Windows 10 on a separate partition. Last summer I realized that I was primarily using Windows on a less-powerful Dell OptiPlex 9020 and only occasionally used the Mac Pro for my personal projects-and even when I did, I used the Mac Pro mostly via VSCode’s remote SSH extension. Except… I have slowly drifted away from macOS towards Windows and this has put the machine’s future at risk. I love the hardware looks, its small form factor and its quietness, plus it is still fast enough for my needs I have no good reasons to replace it. Equipped with a 6-core Intel Xeon E5-1650 v2 3.5GHz, 32GB of RAM, dual AMD FirePro D500 graphics cards, and a 512GB SSD, it’s not a fast machine by today’s standards-but it’s still pretty decent. The Mac Pro 2013 is the most powerful machine I have at home. ![]() ![]() Returns: We have a 100% product guarantee. However, it also means that players can sometimes end up with items they don’t want or need. This element of chance is often seen as one of the key appeals of loot boxes. The contents of a loot box are usually randomized, meaning that players don’t know what they’ll get until they open the box. The cost of a loot box can vary depending on the game, but they usually range from a few dollars to over $100. In some games, such as Star Wars Battlefront II, loot boxes can be purchased using real money. This currency can then be used to purchase loot boxes containing a random selection of items such as new weapons, costumes, or power-ups. For instance, in Overwatch, players can earn in-game currency by completing matches and challenges. Loot boxes usually take the form of a digital mystery box that can be purchased or won within a game. Loot boxes have become increasingly common in recent years and can now be found in a wide variety of games, including popular titles such as Overwatch, Call of Duty: WWII, Star Wars Battlefront II, and FIFA. In some games, loot boxes can even be used to purchase other in-game items. The sort of items contained in a loot box might include objects that can be used to improve a player’s game experience, such as new weapons, costumes, or power-ups. There might be different levels of loot boxes within the same game, to guarantee that the item inside is of a certain in-game value, but there is still no guarantee that a given loot box will give a player the item they want. The contents of the loot box are usually randomized, meaning that players don’t know what they’re going to get until they open the box. Even if you allow your child to make some in-app purchases, you might want to rethink that position when it comes to games with loot boxes. While microtransactions as a category might be concerning for some parents, loot boxes are not the same as other microtransactions and deserve special concern. There are lots of different sorts of microtransactions, and their use is widespread in free-to-play games, as a way for developers to generate revenue. ![]() This sort of in-game purchase is often described as a “microtransaction”. They can often be collected for free during gameplay, but the time intensive nature of collecting them this way incentivizes players who want to progress quickly to purchase large numbers directly. Loot boxes are an in-game item that offers users a randomized in-game prize. In this blog post, we’ll look at how loot boxes work and some potential risks they pose to young players. While loot boxes might be seen by some as harmless fun, there is considerable concern growing, that they are designed in a way that is intentionally manipulative and could pose a risk to children. ![]() Loot boxes are expected to bring in a whopping $20 billion in revenue by 2025 in the US alone. ![]() In some instances, loot boxes become almost like a second currency, as players can use them to buy other in-game items. Loot boxes are digital mystery boxes that can usually be won in-game or purchased, usually using an in-game currency, (though in many cases the virtual currency can itself be purchased using real money), and which often contain items to improve a player’s game experience. If you or your children play today’s most popular online video games, there’s a good chance you’ve come across loot boxes. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() When the time comes to blast down the next straight, just let off the brakes, stay on the throttle, and let the weight transfer to the rear. ![]() It puts more weight on the front wheels so that, without you steering at all, the car yaws into the apex. This slightly sheds some speed from all four wheels, slowing the car just a hair. This is, essentially, how you steer.įor example, if you’re mid-corner and you need to tighten the line, you might press the brakes without lifting the throttle. However, when you’re already beyond those thresholds and sliding, weight transfer will completely change the attitude and direction of the car. When you’re on a race track and sticking, weight transfer will increase the size of the static friction circle and thus increase your thresholds for braking, steering, cornering or accelerating. Here’s where you really start to play with the weight transfer. Now that you’re pointed in the right direction, get on the throttle, transfer weight to the rear, and dig around the corner. In other words, the steering wheel should generally be pointed at dead center, as you’re relying on the spinning wheels to claw around the corner. What’s the optimum angle? This varies a little with driveline type, but basically the idea is to have the drive wheels clawing into the apex to pull you around. If you time this braking and sliding just right, you will arrive at your turn-in point with the car at an optimum angle to slide through the corner. Most rally tires feature outside tread blocks with sharp edges that slow the car in two ways: They carve through the loose gravel and also dig down through soft dirt to the harder surface below. The sliding will help you in your braking, too. The rear brake bias will help you ensure oversteer as well. With the weight now on the nose, use trail braking to initiate the turn and let the car’s rear step out and start to slide. Here’s a typical approach to completing a rally corner: Start with quite a lot of rear brake bias and stand on the brakes-hard-at corner entry. You can use the throttle and brake pedals like a pilot would to steer the rudder of an airplane. The basic procedure for moving a rally car through a slippery gravel or snow corner is to get it sliding and then manage the angle of the slide by transferring weight back and forth. The throttle and brakes can be used to transfer weight from end to end in the car. That means the steering is much less significant than throttle and brake application. Since you have so little traction available, you rely on the delicate balance between relative traction at all four corners of the car. What does have a big effect while you’re sliding? Weight transfer. By spinning the wheels under acceleration, you clean off the surface to an extent and dig down to a better friction surface, achieving more traction.Īnd once you’re sliding, control inputs don’t have nearly the same effects they had while you were sticking. For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction, so a lot of your forward movement is a result of the kinetic energy put into those rocks and clumps of dirt thrown behind you.Īdditionally, a rally stage is usually composed of loose gravel or dirt covering hard-pack earth or clay. Think of it this way: Spinning the wheels can be good. Add to that the effect of loose gravel and dirt on the surface of the road-essentially you’re always in the marbles-and you’ll see that you’re almost constantly operating in the vast no man’s land outside the orthodox friction circle. That’s the challenge of most rally courses: The static friction circle of the given surface is very small, almost useless. The rules are different here.Īs soon as you make a serious control input on gravel or snow, you’re almost always beyond the tire’s friction circle and into what I call dynamic or sliding friction. Some of these things may sound and feel counterintuitive to an experienced track driver, and for good reason. And surprisingly, front-wheel-drive cars are typically faster than their rear-drive counterparts. You never, ever lift when on the edge of control, even in a front- or all-wheel-drive car. Here you must extensively use left-foot braking, trail braking and slide braking. Now you’re trying to manage a constant, 200-mile-long slide through the woods. Most enthusiasts probably know the basic orthodoxies for racing on tarmac: Stay within the tire’s friction circle, use smooth inputs, finish your braking before you start your turning, and roll into the throttle while unwinding the wheel. Not only do you have to race on tarmac, gravel, snow and ice-sometimes all on the same stage-but you must also use some very specific techniques for handling this loose terrain. ![]() Piloting a rally car quickly and competitively requires a broad range of pretty unusual skills. ![]() ![]() ![]() you can find them used pretty reasonable. On machines like the 350X, the CDI trigger is on the flywheel, which means it gets triggered on every revolution of the crank. I think you have to do the same for some four strokes as well, depending on where the CDI gets triggered. The light is thinking that you are having two revs of the crank for every firing, so the RPMs it is reading out is double. On your R, you are firing on every revolution. The light triggers using the clamp around the plug wire, correct? Think if you were on a car engine, the plug only fires every other revolution of the crank (well, on most old cars anyway). I think (key word being think) that you do need to divide by two. ![]() |
